Mindful play: limits that take effect before the start
Published on · Annika Sauer · 7 min read
Mindful play is not a mood but an order of operations: what is decided before the start holds; what is decided mid-session does not.
The sentence everything follows from
Decisions made during a session are systematically worse than decisions made before it. Fatigue, a stake in play and the absence of a natural interruption all push the same way. That is why the tools that genuinely help all take effect before the start.
Four tools in the right order
| Tool | Bounds | When to set it |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Money at risk | Before the first deposit |
| Time limit and session reminder | Length of the session | Before the start |
| Break in play | Access, briefly | When stopping is hard |
| Self-exclusion via OASIS | Access, entirely | When the pattern returns |
The first two are cheap and work quietly; the last two are powerful but hard to choose in the moment. One precondition matters here: OASIS and the cross-operator limit apply only at operators permitted in Germany. Whether that is the case is shown by the check in the article on the GGL.
Two numbers a month
Deposited and withdrawn — both are in the account history. The difference is the result. Done from memory, the same balance almost always comes out too favourable; the reasons are documented in the article on psychology.
Where to find help
In Germany the Federal Centre for Health Education advises free of charge and anonymously on 0800 1 372 700. This editorial team makes no diagnoses and replaces no counselling — it reports published rules and research.
Where today's protective rules come from is described in the article on the history, and how a win is treated for tax in the article on taxes.
